2025 Detective Conan Film Stays at #1, Utano Princesama Taboo Night XXXX Film Debuts at #4 – News

Meitantei Conan: Sekigan no Flashback (Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback), the 28th film in the Detective Conan (Case Closed) franchise, stayed at #1 in its fourth weekend. The film sold 444,000 tickets for 661,522,400 yen (about US$4.52 million) from Friday to Sunday. The film has sold a total of 7.86 million tickets for a cumulative total of 11,365,940,300 yen (about US$77.79 million).

The film opened at #1 at the Japanese box office. The film earned 3,438,626,700 yen (about US$24.15 million) and sold 2,314,690 tickets in its first three days, a new opening-weekend record for the franchise.

Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback opened in Japan on April 18, and has screenings in IMAX, MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema in addition to regular screenings. The film opened in 522 theaters in Japan, a new record for the franchise. King Gnu performs the theme song “Twilight!!!.”

The film takes place in the snowy mountains of Nagano prefecture, and a previous visual depicted Conan on a snowboard. Yamato — an inspector in Nagano with an injured left eye — and Kogoro — a major character whose last major role in a film was back in the ninth movie Detective Conan: Strategy Above the Depths in 2005 — both appear in the film. Taka’aki and Yui, who are also from Nagano, also appear in the film.

Katsuya Shigehara (unit director of Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine) directed the film. Takeharu Sakurai (various Detective Conan movies) wrote the script.

Gekijōban Utano☆Princesama♪ TABOO NIGHT XXXX (read as: TABOO NIGHT KISSES), the new Utano☆Princesama Maji LOVE film, debuted at #4. The film sold 92,000 tickets and earned 189,399,380 yen (about US$1.29 million) in its first three days.

To celebrate the latest film’s release, the franchise’s previous films Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love Kingdom and Utano☆Princesama Maji LOVE ST☆RISH Tours had special encore screenings in theaters for three weeks, that started on March 7.

Takeshi Furuta (Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love Kingdom, Visual Prison) was the film’s chief director, and Akiko Seki (Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- Rhyme Anima, Lycoris Recoil episode director) directed the anime at A-1 Pictures. Chinatsu Kurahana, the original character designer of several Utano☆Princesama films and series, was again credited for the film’s original character designs, and Maki Fujioka (Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love Kingdom, Utano☆Princesama Legend Star, Utano☆Princesama Maji LOVE ST☆RISH Tours) was the character designer. Hiroshi Nakajima (Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love Kingdom, Utano☆Princesama Maji LOVE ST☆RISH Tours) was the CG director, Takeshi Ōkawa (Utano☆Princesama Maji LOVE ST☆RISH Tours, NieR:Automata Ver 1.1a) was the sub CG director, and Katsuyoshi Miyajima (Utano☆Princesama Maji LOVE ST☆RISH Tours) was the character modeling director. Elements Garden composed the music.

Demon Slayer - Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train

The 4K return screening of Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train anime film ranked at #6 in its first weekend. The screening earned 127,716,000 yen (about US$874,300) in its first three days.

The film screening features an exclusive teaser sneak peek of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle film trilogy.

The film began screening in Japan in October 2020, and it topped the box office in Japan for 12 consecutive weeks. The film became the first film ever to pass the 40 billion yen milestone. The film was the highest-earning film worldwide from 2020. It is the first non-Hollywood or non-American film to top the yearly box office worldwide since the beginning of cinema over a century ago.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train Arc, a seven-episode arc that adapts the Mugen Train film, premiered in October 2021.

Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Aniplex will screen the first film in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle film trilogy in theaters, including IMAX and other premium large screen formats, in the United States and Canada on September 12. The film will screen in Japanese with English subtitles and with an English dub.

Tabekko Dōbutsu THE MOVIE, the film based on the Tabekko Dōbutsu brand of animal-shaped butter biscuits, dropped from #5 to #7 in its second weekend. The film earned 87,912,340 yen (about US$601,900) from Friday to Sunday, and has earned a cumulative total of 418,813,710 yen (about US$2.86 million).

The film opened in Japan on Thursday, May 1. The film earned 176,110,370 yen (about US$1.22 million) in its first four days.

Hitoshi Takekiyo (After School Midnighters, FLCL: Grunge) directed the film at Marza Animation Planet, and Tetsuhiro Ikeda (FLCL: Grunge, Inzai Aru Aru Monogatari) wrote the script. Gin Hashiba (Magical Destroyers) composed the music at TBS TV. Chikako Yokota was the sound director at Glovision. Riko Koarai was the creative producer, Masato Ui was the animation producer, Yōsuke Sakai was the CG supervisor, Kiyoaki Kamei was the art director, and Hiroki Takahashi was the line producer. Travis Japan performed the film’s theme song “Would You Like One?”

Kotaro Sudo planned and produced the film. The Klockworx Co., Ltd. and TBS TV are distributing the film.

The Tabekko Dōbutsu biscuits ship worldwide in over 20 countries and territories, and have been sold since 1978. The snacks are shaped like animals and labeled with the English name of the animal.

COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing (Gekijо̄ban Project Sekai: Kowareta Sekai to Utaenai Miku, or The Broken World and a Miku Who Can’t Sing), the anime film based on the Project Sekai: Colorful Stage feat. Hatsune Miku smartphone game, did not rank on this week’s list, but it has crossed 1.4 billion yen in cumulative revenue as of Sunday. The film started 4DX and MX4D screenings on May 9, and has sold a total of 1.10 million tickets.

The film opened in Japan on January 17. It debuted at #2 and sold 232,500 tickets and earned 306,817,000 yen (about US$2.15 million in current conversion) in its first three days.
