Carey Mulligan is in negotiations to nab a key role in Narnia, Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia fantasy novels.
Netflix is backing the adaptation of the books, with Gerwig’s feature tackling the sixth novel of the series, The Magician’s Nephew. Gerwig wrote the script and is directing.
The project is deep in the casting stage, with Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey and Meryl Streep the big names on the roll call as the production seeks out its young leads.
Nephew, which was published after the most famous of the book in the series, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, serves as the latter’s prequel. It follows two youngsters who, thanks to an uncle’s magic dabbling, unleash the evil White Witch into a turn of the 20th century London.
Craig is reportedly playing the uncle, Mackey the White Witch, and Streep voicing Aslan, the talking lion who in the books is the King of Kings.
Mulligan will play the very sick mother of Digory, one of the two kids in the adventure.
Netflix had no comment. Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal and Vincent Sieber are among the producers of the adaptation, which will be getting a two-week theatrical Imax run in late 2026, something for which Gerwig fought.
Mulligan is a three-time Oscar nominee — for her performances in Maestro, Promising Young Woman and An Education — and counts Saltburn among her recent offerings. She is repped by CAA, Julian Belfrage Associates and Jackoway Austen.
