The R-rated cult classic is set to be rereleased later this year in 4K Ultra HD for its 50th anniversary, while a new documentary, Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror, premiered in March at SXSW. Directed by Jim Sharman, the 1975 cult classic stars Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick as Brad (a-hole!) and (dammit!) Janet, a newly engaged couple whose car breaks down in the rain near a mysterious castle. While seeking shelter at the mansion, the duo meet Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a transvestite mad scientist who is hosting a costume party with a bizarre cast of characters. The R-rated film also stars writer Richard O’Brien (who wrote both the original stage show and screenplay) as the butler Riff Raff, Patricia Quinn as the maid Magenta, Nell Campbell as the groupie Columbia, Meat Loaf as the biker Eddie and Peter Hinwood as Rocky.
Rocky Horror sparked a 1981 follow-up, Shock Treatment, and a two-hour special, The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again, starring Laverne Cox.
