Roston Chase has been appointed the new Test captain of the West Indies men’s team. Having last played a Test match more than two years ago, the 33-year-old will take over from Kraigg Brathwaite, who resigned from his role in March earlier this year.
Chase’s first assignment in the role will be the Test series against Australia at home, which will also be the first rubber for both teams in the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Jomel Warrican has been named the vice-captain of the side.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) said it adopted a “data-informed, multi-dimensional framework to guide the selection” and named John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, and Justin Greaves among those shortlisted for the leadership roles.
Shai Hope, the current ODI and T20I captain, “respectfully declined consideration to focus on his existing leadership roles,” the CWI release further said.
The interview panel consisted of Daren Sammy (head coach), Miles Bascombe (Director of Cricket) and Enoch Lewis (Chairman of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee).
“This selection process is one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking we have undertaken,” CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow said. “I am deeply impressed by the professionalism, objectivity, and strategic thinking that shaped the final decision. It sets a new benchmark for leadership appointments in West Indies cricket.”
Sammy urged the fans to get behind their new captain. “I fully endorse this appointment. Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward. I urge fans across the region to rally behind him, we’re building something special.”
Chase has played in 49 Tests, scoring 2265 runs at an average of 26.33, including five hundreds. He also has 85 wickets, his best figures being 8 for 60 against England in Bridgetown 2019.
